Precipitate Lab.

Mix two clear solutions and sometimes a solid appears out of nowhere. Zoom in to see the ions swap partners, and why one pair drops out. Pick a mix (or press Replay) with the sound on to hear it explained.

Mix
    Swapping partners

    Why this one drops out
SolubleAble to dissolve. The ions are more attracted to water than to each other, so water pulls them apart.
InsolubleNot able to dissolve. The ions are more attracted to each other than to water, so they clump into a solid.

Try ones that aren't on the sheet

      Flashcards this explains

Precipitate reactionTwo solutions are mixed and a solid ionic compound (a precipitate) is formed
Ionic compoundPositive and negative ions electrostatically attracted to form a neutral compound
Soluble meansAble to dissolve (ions more attracted to water than to each other)
Insoluble meansNot able to dissolve (ions more attracted to each other than to water)
Sodium hydroxide + lead nitrate →Sodium nitrate + lead hydroxide
Calcium chloride + sodium sulfate →Calcium sulfate + sodium chloride

The first two reactions in the picker are the ones from the sheet; the others are extra practice. Flashcards · Bunsen Burner Lab · Metal Reactions Lab
